A reminder that targas are the only true form of convertible

I know what you’re thinking. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , c reaky leaky targa tops are old news, no longer relevant. Of a bygone era.

But how come...all the sweet new convertibles are modelled off the same style? That slick as hell side profile with the full rollover bar, keeping the lines of a fixed roof coupe? Rather than the dumpy flat deck you get with a traditional folding soft top?

Hrm.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

You ever see one o’ them Mercedes cabriolets with the wind deflector up? As if they’re desperately trying to graft on the benefits of a targa to an inferior design. Silly.

Kinja'd!!!

Don’t forget targas :)

This is a good take. As someone who slightly hates convertibles with every fibre of my being, something about targas speak to me. Even if they really aren’t much different from regular convertibles. Especially the 911 Targa, which is both the best looking 911 and the best looking modern Porsche full stop.

Kinja'd!!!

I guess it’s because I hate convertibles for 2 reasons, 1. I live in a frozen tundra hellscape, and 2. I don’t like the way they look. Targas fix at least one of those issues.

I tend to agree with this take.  I like convertibles well enough,  but I would love a targa top.

The trueness revolution would be a hatchback with a targa top. I’d love it If my Convertible Rabbit could also have the benefits of a hatchback. I guess the Wrangler is the closest thing you can get.

Even though they look cool, the single best aspect of a convertible is the visibility. I can’t imagine ever giving that up if I had the choice between the two.

Haha, really? I suppose you’re right. I drove an NA MX-5 recently which was my first time in a true convertible. You turn around to look for traffic and there’s just...no car.

Rollcage in this instance but that’s pretty minimal.

I make do without that visibility. I think it’s fine as long as you keep in mind where your blind spots are. And I think it’s fair to say that visibility in a convertible with the roof up is usually as bad as any car on the market. No rear quarter windows.

I’m 100% in Camp Targa. The wonderful wind-in-your-hair feeling of a convertible without giving up the structural integrity or beautiful lines of a coupe.

Best when you have a garage so you can leave the roof off. It is a bit of a fumble ;)

I thought this might come up. It does look glorious. But I’m not sure I agree with the amount of complexity they had to add to make it look like a simple targa. Hence why I didn’t mention it in this post.

Glad it exists though.

Hmmmm. The Smart Roadster can be had with a wagony thing and a targa roof. So can the Nissan EXA.

Kinja'd!!!

But that’s not quite what you mean.

The big ass Veloster sun roof is ballpark.

Kinja'd!!!

I see what you mean though and I agree. Would be a cool differentiator - a cheap, spacious economy car that’s also fun

Spot on. Safety be damned, you can't get the same open air feeling in a Targa. It's just a glorified sunroof.

Yep. Dropping the top and having a 3 60° view is the best part of convertibles

For whatever reason, I hate every single targa 911 ever made.

I’m 99% sure it’s the ugly rear window and the ruined profile and the added weight and.....

The del Sol was the perfect targa. Slotted into the trunk, huge trunk for transporting whatever you wanted  when no roof in there, roll-down rear window offered plenty of visibility.

Plus that VTEC yo.

You’re so right. Compared to my MR2 it has a bigger trunk and more practical roof, and the roll down window! Shame it’s FWD, but the roof is just right.

And no crazy complicated folding mechanisms. I’d say the trans top thing isn’t too bad for complication

This is true. The MR2 in particular has quite a small pair of openings . The 4 seater Z31/Z32 had a bigger open area.

I’m sure you’re not the only one crying out for this. I’m sure it’s the next big market segment after SUVs die down

Maybe the humps are just trying to graft the targa-style bits to a regular ‘vert!

Don't get me wrong, I love a nice Targa. It's just not the same experience as a true convertible. And if you really want the open air experience, try sitting in the backseat of a larger convertible. My dad has owned a few Sebrings, and even in a car as uninspiring as that, it's fun to ride in the back.

That’s it. Good for keeping heat in, cold out. Better against thieves than a soft top. More durable and feels better quality (glass vs cloth).
